Tendonitis of the Achilles Tendon

Blog by Vancouver Orthotics, Hycroft Medical Building (114-3195 Granville St @ 16th Ave) | July 2nd, 2010

This morning I received an email from someone concerned about pain & swelling on the tendon this attaches to the back of her heel. This is called the achilles tendon and it is commonly irritated by long hours of standing or repetitive pressures such as walking, jogging & running. Proper footwear can play a big role in reducing the stress to this tendon. Improper footwear can be a definite cause of aggritation.

Itis = inflammation

With the philosophy of "treating the source not just the symptom" in mind:

  • faulty biomechanics from the foot can be the cause of accumulated tension in other areas of the body such as the achilles tendon.
  • having a postural & foot evaluation to determine the status of your arch is an important first step in evaluating how to treat this set of symptoms.
  • taking medication may be masking the problem but not treating the root cause of the tissue break-down.

If you experience symptoms of heel tendon pain, inflammation and discomfort and if you are looking for some solutions please contact Dr. Michael Horowitz at Vancouver Orthotics - 604-737-3668.
