Deep Achy Morning Back Pain

Spine Time with Dr. Michael HorowitzEver wake up in the morning and experience a deep achy discomfort that goes away but only after you get moving in the morning? Is this deep achy pain persistent and unwilling to go away over days, weeks or even months? Ever wondered why your body is so stiff and achy in the morning as you get out of bed? That is what today's blog entry is all about. A friend recently wrote me and asked this very question. Why does it happen and what to do!

Remember that the body loves motion. Lack of motion for long periods of time (ie 6-8 hours of sleep) can affect blood flow and puts pressure on spinal joints which cause them to seize up. When the body was previously injured or the person was experiencing a previous episode of back pain, this scenario is especially possible. Poor mattress choice or sleeping position make this deep achy back discomfort even more noticeable. The solution? Get your body moving, get adjusted and try yoga or a reasonable stretching routine.

I wanted to ask you a question about my back as it is still bugging me from before. it seems that it's fine during the day, but when I wake up in the morning, I'm in a lot of pain. it's more of an ache vs a sharp pain. when I start moving around, I feel better, however it takes a few hours. I'm trying to avoid taking meds, but sometimes I need to in order to feel better. do you think that my mattress is exacerbating the issue? or do you think it's my muscles that are really tight and needing to exercise/ stretch more right now? When sharp pain becomes deep dull achy pain, especially in the morning, it means it's time to get moving! Get into a routine of yoga or home stretching and try to get onto the elliptical or swim 2-4/week. Not heavy weight bearing activities like running or jumping, but movement activities. This will help stimulate blood flow, increase flexibility in your muscles and get your joints moving again. Consider having your feet checked for flatness and loss of shock absorption. You may benefit from a pair of custom orthotic inserts. Add chiropractic adjustments for better alignment and massages for better circulation... these 3 things should help!
