Vancouver Orthotics offers custom Birkenstock orthotics for patients who would like the comfort and style of a Birkenstock sandal combined with an orthotic made specifically for their feet.

The custom orthotic is manufactured through The Orthotic Group (TOG) and incorporated into a newly purchased Birkenstock sandal. This service is available through all four of our Vancouver offices.

How Custom Birkenstock Orthotics Work

The process begins with an initial consultation and examination. A 3D digital foot scan is required for all custom Birkenstock orthotic orders.

Your custom orthotic is then manufactured through TOG and incorporated into the new Birkenstock sandal selected for your order.

Please note: Vancouver Orthotics can no longer modify or add custom orthotics to Birkenstocks that you already own. A new Birkenstock must be purchased as part of the custom orthotic order.

Cost of Custom Birkenstock Orthotics

The current cost is:

• Initial examination: $95
• Custom orthotic: $450
• Birkenstock sandal: $250

Total: $795

No taxes are charged on the above fees.

Choosing Your Birkenstock Style

Birkenstock offers a variety of sandal styles, footbed designs, widths and sizes. Because the fit can vary between styles, choosing the appropriate size and model is an important part of ordering a custom Birkenstock orthotic.

Patients are encouraged to determine their preferred Birkenstock size and fit before placing their order. Trying on Birkenstock sandals at a retail store beforehand can be helpful.

We also recommend having more than one preferred style or colour in mind in case your first selection is unavailable through TOG.

All custom Birkenstock orthotic orders are final sale and non-refundable.

Birkenstock Size Chart

Birkenstock footwear uses European sizing. The chart below provides a general comparison between Birkenstock sizes and men's US shoe sizes.

This sizing chart is intended as a general guide. Fit can vary depending on foot shape, width and Birkenstock style. Because custom Birkenstock orthotic orders are final sale, patients should confirm their appropriate Birkenstock size and fit before placing an order.

Birkenstock Types and Footbeds

There are many different types of Birkenstock sandals and shoes. Models can differ in their design, straps, materials, width, sole and footbed construction.

Birkenstock is particularly well known for its contoured footbed. Depending on the model, Birkenstock footwear may be available with different footbed designs and materials.

While these features can influence comfort and fit, a standard Birkenstock footbed should not be confused with a custom orthotic made specifically for an individual patient.

Standard Birkenstock Footbed vs. Custom Orthotic

A standard Birkenstock footbed is manufactured in predetermined shapes and sizes. It is not individually made from an examination or 3D scan of your feet.

A custom orthotic, by comparison, is made specifically for an individual patient based on information obtained during the clinical assessment and 3D digital foot scan.

With the custom Birkenstock option offered through Vancouver Orthotics and TOG, the custom orthotic component is incorporated into a newly purchased Birkenstock sandal.

Are Birkenstocks Orthopedic Shoes?

The terms orthopedic footwear, supportive footwear, custom-made orthopedic shoes and custom orthotics are sometimes used interchangeably by patients, retailers and insurance plans, but they do not necessarily mean the same thing.

Birkenstocks are commercially manufactured footwear with a contoured footbed and other design features intended to support the foot. A standard retail Birkenstock is not the same thing as a custom-made orthopedic shoe or an individually manufactured custom orthotic.

The Birkenstock service offered by Vancouver Orthotics combines a newly purchased Birkenstock with a custom orthotic made for the individual patient through TOG.

Can You Put Custom Orthotics in Birkenstocks?

Some Birkenstock styles and custom orthotic manufacturing systems allow an orthotic solution to be incorporated into the footwear.

At Vancouver Orthotics, our current Birkenstock program is provided exclusively through The Orthotic Group (TOG). A new Birkenstock is ordered as part of the process and a 3D digital foot scan is mandatory.

We do not modify Birkenstocks that patients already own.

Are Custom Birkenstock Orthotics Covered by Insurance?

Extended health insurance plans vary considerably in how they define and reimburse custom orthotics, orthopedic footwear, custom-made orthopedic shoes and footwear modifications.

These terms can be confusing, and coverage for one type of product does not necessarily mean that another type of footwear or orthotic will be eligible.

Before ordering, we recommend checking directly with your insurance provider to determine your plan's eligibility requirements, required documentation and reimbursement limits. Coverage cannot be guaranteed by Vancouver Orthotics.

Do I Need an Examination and 3D Foot Scan?

Yes. An initial examination and 3D digital foot scan are required for the custom Birkenstock orthotic program.

The examination allows us to assess your feet and biomechanics and discuss whether custom orthotics and the available Birkenstock options may be appropriate for your individual needs.

Can I Bring in My Own Birkenstocks?

No. Vancouver Orthotics no longer modifies Birkenstocks that patients already own.

The current program requires a new Birkenstock to be purchased as part of the order and the custom orthotic to be manufactured through TOG.

Where Are Custom Birkenstock Orthotics Available?

Custom Birkenstock orthotics are available through all four Vancouver Orthotics locations.
